Coffee in the United States is served by three kinds of places: national chains with drive-thrus and mobile ordering, independent neighborhood cafes that double as a workspace or a meeting spot, and specialty shops that roast their own beans or buy single-origin lots and brew them by pour-over, espresso or cold brew. Most open between 6 and 7 a.m. on weekdays, slightly later on weekends, and the busiest hour is the commute rush before 9. A drip coffee runs a few dollars, espresso drinks and specialty pours more, and tipping a dollar or a percentage on the card reader is customary but not required. Nearly every cafe offers free Wi-Fi, though some limit laptop seating at peak times or on weekends, and outlets are often the scarce resource.

Durham is in North Carolina, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. Getting around Durham is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across North Carolina's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

As an Instacart shopper, I walk into dozens of businesses every week. I know everyone is busy, and I certainly don’t expect special treatment. But it’s amazing how many places don’t even look up or say hello. This morning, I made a delivery to Foster Street Coffee, and the experience couldn’t have been more different. From the moment I walked in, everyone was smiling, welcoming, and genuinely kind. They even offered me a drink. That small act of kindness made a much bigger impact than they probably realize. In a world where everyone seems to be rushing, a warm greeting and a little hospitality can completely change someone’s day. The iced latte was absolutely delicious—smooth, refreshing, and exactly what I needed to start my morning. More importantly, I left with a smile on my face. Thank you, Foster Street Coffee, for reminding me that kindness still matters. You’ve definitely earned a new customer, and I can’t wait to come back and try more of your menu. Highly recommend!

Had a great iced latte, sat outside to drink it while I ate my breakfast burrito and accidentally knocked my coffee off the table. A staff member noticed and kindly offered to replace my drink even though it was my own fault. Great service and great coffee, thank you!

I stop by semi-regularly as it's nearby and I've never had a bad experience, but I've never had a stellar experience. The espresso is fine but the flavor profile is more akin to a national chain coffee shop than a micro roaster, which may disappoint some people, and the service is all over the place. Some baristas are super friendly and chatty and other times you won't even get a greeting, just a hollow stare. Personally my service has always been very fast, but I've never ordered from the kitchen and my drink is simple.

Nice place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and a bit of breakfast. We had the Mexican Mochi and a waffle 🧇. Both were delicious. Friendly staff and parking validation make this a go to spot for us.

I went on a Saturday after farmers market and regretted choosing to have coffee here, especially with so many other options around. I’m not exaggerating when I say it took forever to get our coffees (the owner should really consider investing in more machines). The wait wasn’t even the worst part, the taste of the coffee was terrible. We ordered a chai latte (horrible), a mocha (horrible), and a latte (it was okay). I don’t recommend getting anything here.
